Uttan–Virar Sea Link
Uttan–Virar Sea Link is a proposed ~55 km sea bridge connecting Uttan (Bhayander) and Virar. It forms the final northern segment of the Mumbai Coastal Road Network.
Uttan–Virar Sea Link Latest Update
The Uttan–Virar Sea Link is currently in the planning and preliminary engineering stage. The Maharashtra government has recognized the urgent need for this link as population growth in Virar, Vasai, and the Mira–Bhayander Municipal Corporation area has intensified pressure on existing road and rail infrastructure.
MMRDA is coordinating feasibility studies, environmental impact assessments, and initial stakeholder consultations for the crossing. The project is expected to be formally approved and put to tender once the Versova–Bhayandar Coastal Road — the immediately preceding segment — achieves construction momentum.
Track this page for the latest DPR announcements, tender notifications, and alignment finalization updates. Once construction begins, the Uttan–Virar Sea Link is projected to become one of the most-searched Mumbai infrastructure projects due to its direct impact on millions of north-suburban commuters.
Uttan–Virar Sea Link Route
The proposed alignment begins at Uttan, a fishing village and coastal settlement on the western edge of Bhayander, where it will tie into the northern terminus of the Versova–Bhayandar Coastal Road. It then crosses the Vasai Creek — a wide tidal estuary north of Mumbai — before landing at Virar on the eastern bank.
The exact alignment is subject to finalization in the DPR, with engineers evaluating multiple crossing options based on water depth, navigational requirements, and mangrove sensitivity along the creek's edges.

Why the Uttan–Virar Sea Link Matters
Decongests Western Express Highway
Millions of daily commuters between Virar and Mumbai currently depend entirely on the WEH. This sea link provides a high-speed coastal bypass.
Unlocks Northern MMR Growth
Virar–Vasai is one of MMR's fastest-growing residential corridors. Improved connectivity will catalyze real estate and commercial investment.
Completes the Coastal Ring
Without this link, the coastal expressway is an incomplete arc. The UVSL closes the northern loop, creating a true road network from Nariman Point to Virar.
Slashes Travel Time
The Bhayander-to-Virar commute currently takes 30–45 min via road. A dedicated sea link is projected to cut this to under 15 minutes.
