Versova–Bhayandar Coastal Road

Versova–Bhayandar Coastal Road is a proposed ~38 km coastal road connecting Versova, Madh Island, Gorai, Manori, and Bhayandar. It serves as the "missing link" of the Mumbai Coastal Road Network.

Strategically Critical — Least Understood SegmentThe VBCR has less public awareness than the other segments but is architecturally essential. Without it, the coastal expressway network cannot function as a continuous corridor. This page tracks the project from planning to construction.

Versova–Bhayandar Coastal Road Latest Update

The Versova–Bhayandar Coastal Road is one of the lesser-publicized but strategically vital components of Mumbai's coastal infrastructure master plan. The Maharashtra Government has conceptually approved the corridor as a key segment of the Mumbai Coastal Road Network, recognizing it as the landside connector between the two major sea links.

Environmental clearances are a significant consideration for this project, given its alignment passes through Madh Island, Gorai, and Manori — areas that include sensitive coastal wetlands, mangrove patches, and fishing community settlements. MMRDA is working through the EIA process in parallel with DPR preparation.

Once construction commences, this road will open up Madh Island, Gorai, and Manori — currently semi-isolated by creek water bodies — to rapid coastal connectivity. The project will have transformative implications for real estate, tourism, and daily commuting in these communities.

Versova–Bhayandar Coastal Road Route

The alignment starts at Versova on the western coast of Andheri, where it connects to the northern landing of the Bandra–Versova Sea Link. It then travels north via Madh Island (requiring a bridge over the Malad Creek inlet), through the coastal village of Gorai, continues along the Manori coast, and terminates at Bhayandar/Uttan — where it hands off to the Uttan–Virar Sea Link.

Impact Analysis

Why the Versova–Bhayandar Coastal Road Matters

★ Bridges the Missing Link

Fills the gap between Bandra–Versova Sea Link and Uttan–Virar Sea Link, allowing uninterrupted seafront transit.

★ Suburb Bypass

Enables commuters to bypass the heavily choked Western Express Highway (WEH) and local traffic bottlenecks in the western suburbs.

★ Connects Semi-Isolated Areas

Opens direct road connections to Madh Island, Gorai, and Manori, which are currently cut off by local creek inlets.

★ Catalyzes Northern MMR Growth

Unlocks substantial economic growth, tourism potential, and real estate value along Mumbai's northern coastline.
