Pune Bengaluru Expressway Status & Latest Update

The Pune Bengaluru Expressway is undergoing route alignment finalization. Surveys are analyzing geographical terrain options to minimize environmental impact and reduce land acquisition hurdles.

NHAI is coordinating with state authorities in Maharashtra and Karnataka to accelerate joint measurement surveys. Financial allocations are projected once the detailed engineering design is approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

What is the Pune Bangalore Greenfield Expressway?

The Pune Bangalore Greenfield Expressway is a major infrastructure proposal by the NHAI designed to establish a brand-new, high-speed connection between Maharashtra and Karnataka. Unlike brownfield expansion projects that broaden existing roads, this greenfield corridor is built along an entirely new alignment, minimizing structure demolition and local property conflicts.

Key features of this Greenfield corridor include:

  • Difference from NH-48: While the existing NH-48 is heavily saturated with local industrial traffic and bottlenecks through Satara and Kolhapur, the greenfield expressway bypasses these dense urban centers to offer an uninterrupted flow for long-distance transit.
  • Greenfield Alignment: Traversing greenfield rural terrains, the alignment permits massive cost efficiencies in land acquisition and allows for straighter, safer designs.
  • Access Controlled Design: Designed for speeds of up to 120 km/h, the 6-to-8 lane highway features restricted entry/exit points, keeping slow-moving local transport separate.
  • Travel Time Savings: Slashing transit times between the two IT hubs from the current 15–18 hours down to an estimated 8–9 hours, this projected highway acts as a direct link connecting the Pune Ring Road to the Delhi Mumbai Expressway network, while routing past the Samruddhi Mahamarg, Mumbai Pune Expressway, and terminating at the Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR).

Pune Bengaluru Expressway Route Map & Alignment

The expressway will run parallel to the current NH-48 route, traversing through major agricultural and industrial belts. It begins on the outskirts of Pune and cuts southwards across Maharashtra and Karnataka, terminating on the outer Ring Road of Bengaluru.

Pune Bengaluru Expressway Route Through Cities

To optimize travel times and avoid metropolitan congestion, the Pune Bengaluru Expressway will bypass central metropolitan cores while providing dedicated entry-exit interchanges for secondary corridors.

The proposed alignment routes through the following key cities and transit districts:

Maharashtra Section
  • Pune (Starts from proposed Pune Ring Road)
  • Satara (Bypassing heavy NH-48 saturation)
  • Sangli (Connecting agricultural belts)
  • Kolhapur (Terminal district in Maharashtra)
Karnataka Section
  • Belagavi (Connecting northern industrial zones)
  • Davanagere (Major commercial hub link)
  • Tumakuru (Key industrial corridor connection)
  • Bengaluru (Ends at Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road)
