Kolkata Metro Expansion & Master Plan Projects
As India's pioneer rapid-transit network inaugurated in 1984, Kolkata Metro Rail is executing a 139.28 km combined grid across 6 major Kolkata Metro corridors (benchmarked against the official 122.9 km master-plan figure). Operated by Metro Railway Kolkata (a zone of Indian Railways) alongside Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL) and RVNL, the network features landmark civil engineering breakthroughs including India's first underwater transportation tunnel 13m below the Hooghly River bed:
Line 1 (Blue Line): Dakshineswar ↔ Kavi Subhash (31.365 km)
India's pioneer Kolkata Metro Line, spanning 31.365 km across 26 stations along Kolkata's central north-south transit spine (15.70 km underground). Services currently operate between Dakshineswar and Shahid Khudiram, with the Kavi Subhash Blue Line terminal closed since July 2025 for structural repairs.
Line 2 (Green Line / East-West): Salt Lake Sector V ↔ Howrah Maidan (16.55 km)
A 16.55 km fully operational corridor across 12 stations between Salt Lake Sector V and Howrah Maidan, featuring approximately 520 m of twin tunnels beneath the Hooghly River—India's first underwater metro crossing.
Line 3 (Purple Line): Joka ↔ Esplanade (15.2 km)
A 15.2 km planned corridor across 12 Kolkata Metro Stations serving South-West Kolkata. The 7.7 km elevated section from Joka to Majerhat (7 stations) is operational; the ~7.5 km underground extension from Majerhat to Esplanade is under construction.
Line 4 (Yellow Line / Airport Metro Kolkata): Noapara ↔ Barasat (18.0 km)
An 18.0 km official corridor across 10 stations. The 6.77 km Noapara to Jai Hind Airport section (4 stations) is commissioned, Jai Hind to Michael Nagar (2 stations) is under construction, and New Barrackpore to Barasat (4 stations) civil work is held up.
Line 5 (Pink Line): Baranagar ↔ Barrackpore (12.50 km)
A sanctioned 12.50 km broad gauge corridor across 11 planned stations connecting Baranagar to Barrackpore along BT Road. The line remains planned with construction yet to commence; a ₹1,587.3 Cr tender has been floated for the 12.3 km 10-station section (Baranagar station excluded).
Line 6 (Orange Line): Kavi Subhash ↔ Airport via New Town (29.87 km)
A 29.87 km eastern circumferential corridor across 24 planned stations. The 9.9 km operational section runs between Kavi Subhash and Beleghata (9 stations); 19.97 km from Beleghata to Jai Hind Bimanbandar Airport is under construction.
